MARKETING A HOTEL (25 minutes, 2001)
INSIDE A LEISURE BUSINESS (30 minutes, 2001)
Multiplex cinemas are springing up all over Britain, not just providing films but fast food outlets, video arcades, sweet shops - a total "consumer experience". They're designed to maximise sales. This video goes behind the scenes of UCI, a major leisure and entertainment company. We also look at a small independent cinema in London's Notting Hill. We compare and contrast how these very different businesses are managed. What will the impact of new technology be on the way films are shown. We also look at how staff are treated and what it's like to work in a multiplex.
THE IMPACT OF TOURISM III - Majorca (30 minutes, 2000)
Tourism has brought the Spanish island of Majorca prosperity - but at a cost. Much of the coast has been blighted by hotel development. There's too much traffic and rubbish and not enough water. Farming having declined, the island is dependent on the tourists. The authorities are encouraging "greener" holidays, better both for the local economy and the environment. But will they succeed?
INSIDE A TRAVEL BUSINESS: a case study in business change (28 minutes, 2000)
A glimpse at life in the firm Avalon Travel as it wrestles with planning its future. With its traditional business in decline it must find a new direction to survive and prosper. Two main options are put forward, each with advantages and disadvantages. First, a senior manager believes they should buy an existing company already exploiting the Internet. Second, a director thinks they should acquire a company in a totally different field.

1. THE IMPACT OF TOURISM II - Reugen (26 minutes, 1999)
Like many holiday resorts, the German island of Ruegen in the Baltic is looking for 'sustainable tourism' - visitors who will bring money without damaging its natural environment.
But Ruegen is unusal - it was in East Germany, behind the 'Iron Curtain' where the state managed everything and strictly controlled everyone leaving or entering the country. Now the Berlin Wall has come down, people on Ruegen have high hopes for 'quality tourism' - small numbers of wealthy visitors who will boost their flagging economy. But will this be possible? The coming of the free market has brought new investment, but without careful planning, there is a danger of spoiling the island's natural environment.
1. THE IMPACT OF TOURISM I - Antigua (31 minutes, 1998)
This video explores the effect tourism is having on the island of Antigua in the Caribbean. It looks at the effects on the people, their culture, economy and the environment. With a beach for every day of the year, it seems like a holiday paradise but beneath the surface it's a different story for many of the islanders. Little of the money the tourists spend stays on the island. Most hotels are foreign-owned and its food and even souvenirs are produced abroad. Luxury "all inclusive" hotels and cruise ships discourage tourists from spending with local traders. Tourism development also threatens the natural environment, such as the mangrove swamps. Local groups are promoting new forms of holiday-making, eco-tourism for example. But change will be slow. Government corruption and pressure from big business stand in the way.
2. TOO MUCH TOURISM? (45 minutes) (1997)
Is the Lake District in England in danger of being destroyed by too much tourism? Or should it be encouraged for the sake of local businesses? This video explores the conflict over the future of one of Britain's most popular National Parks. The two main areas covered by the programme are the use of Lake Windermere for power boats and the long-standing battle over the proposed Ambleside bypass.
3. MARKETING LEISURE (25 minutes) (1993)
How do you market something as intangible as leisure? Guildford Spectrum claims to be Britain's biggest one-stop leisure complex, with an ice rink, bowling alley, leisure pool and fitness gym. This video takes a critical look at the centre's marketing mix, including its product, promotion, price and place. We follow the marketing manager as she holds meetings to explore various new marketing initiatives.
4. SYSTEMS FOR LEISURE (26 minutes) (1993)
How do information systems work in a busy leisure centre? This video demonstrates the various systems in action in Guildford Spectrum, a large leisure complex. At the heart of the business is a computerised booking system used by many of the staff at the centre. We see a desktop publishing system being used to create leaflets; a database system is used to help target the centre's facilities at different kinds of customers; a building management system is employed to control the temperature of the complex.
5. HOTEL USA (25 minutes) (1993)
Customer care is rated as a top priority in the hospitality industry: a vital weapon in the battle for competitive advantage. But how do companies set about finding people who are best at the "personal touch"? This video examines an interviewing technique developed in the US and now being applied in the UK. The technique, developed by a firm called Talent Plus, is based on structured interviewing, first used by the US army to recruit staff. Now it's being used widely in hotels, pubs and other leisure businesses.
