Multimedia Engine Basics

Using videos, colorful animations, and photos, this entertaining multimedia program explores engine basics, including the four areas of: (1) Crankshafts; (2) Flywheels and Camshafts; Valves; (3) Pistons, Rings and Pins; and (4) Carburetors and Fuel Injection. The first section begins with a look at the crankshaft and emphazes the high degree of accuracy involved in its development. he flywheel is then examined, along with the process of balancing the crankshaft and flywheel in both states of equilibrium and motion. Specific design dimensions, material and location ll have to be taken into consideration when designing valves. Section two looks at early rotary valve design and the more commonly used poppet valves. It also reviews various methods used to diffuse heat build-up within a valve. Section three outlines the design requirements for developing pistons, and on the use of aluminum and aluminum alloys to produce strong, but lightweight, pistons. The two distinct classifications of piston rings are explained.  Finally, the program looks at the basics of carburator  and fuel injection systems, and how each is used to regulate the gasoline/air mixture in an engine. Quizzes are found at ie end of each section, and teacher's may access scores to Monitor progress and understanding. This CD-ROM provides a wealth of information in an interesting and interactive format. 's a great way to learn about engine basics!

Blue Print Reading Series

Part One Architectural, Sheet Metal, and Electrical
Learn how to read blueprints in this easy to understand program Divided into three parts, the first lesson describes the major categories of architectural plans including preliminary sketches, display drawings, working drawings and how to read them. Plot plan and foundation plans are also discussed. Lesson two describes sheet metal drawings and what is made from them. Learn about plane and curved surfaces, square elbows and how to check the accuracy of a sheet metal pattern. Electrical drawings are explored in lesson three. Single pole switches, hot wires and neutral lines are explained as well as electrical symbols. Quizzes a provided at the end of each lesson, allowing users to test the knowledge of blueprint reading.

Engineering Technology - Materials Science - Part 1

Many of the metals being used today were known to even prehistoric man. This software p gram begins with an interesting look at the history of metal use, including "cold forging tec piques" and "smelting." It also looks at the use of copper as the first industrial metal and! creation of bronze metal which revolutionized the art of carpentry, stone working, and weapon making. With this background information, users complete lessons on the structure of met and properties of metals. The structure component examines the orientation of atoms in 1 solid and liquid state of metals and looks at processes used to affect their strength and flexibility The properties section looks at the group of chemical elements classified as metals and t physical, mechanical and chemical properties of each.

Engineering Technology - Materials Science - Part 2

Part two in this software series begins with an examination of how alloys are created by combining two or more elements. These all( can be manipulated to improve strength, ductility, hardness, wear resistance and corrosion resistance, making them of much great industrial importance than pure metals. Section two reviews the classification of metals into the two groups of ferrous and non ferric metals, and how this classification system is used to identify the composition and specifications of industrial metals. Finally, the program outlines testing procedures used to determine how a metal will react to both destructive and non-destructive conditions.
