AVP-W98-141002    Producing Energy

How can energy be produced economically and profitably, but without polluting the environment at the same time? The answer to this question is being sought all over the world when comparing the various methods of energy production. The choices made now will have a long-term effect on the future of mankind, and it is today's school children who will have to make the decisions and choices. For this reason they need a thorough basic understanding of energy and the advantages and disadvantages of the various options.

Producing Energy is the result of the work of a panel of experts consisting of specialists in energy technology and teachers. The program comprises simulation, animation and multimedia designed to make the software extremely versatile. This means that for younger pupils the processes of energy production are mainly presented to explain their basic functions, whereas at higher levels it is possible to "zoom" into some particular detail for more intensive study. When using the software it is easy to apply different methods of working, so that you can, for example, either concentrate on one particular means of energy production, or, carry out a comparison of the suitability of different methods of energy production in a certain part of the world. The computer would then simulate the necessary parameters and make a summary of the calculations made. Types of power plants included in the program: coal-fired, nuclear, hydro, gas-fired, solar and windpower. The purpose of Producing Energy is to provide users with accurate information, in as comprehensive and stimulating form as possible, to help them make up their own minds about the available options. Requires 5-6 MB free hard disk space and 3 MB RAM.

AVP-W98-141003    EnergyFlow

The EF - EnergyFlow Software familiarizes you with different forms of energy. It is a presentation of phenomena occurring all around us, which in fact are transformations of energy. EF presents the physical principles of energy, the units used with energy in physics, and the transformations of different forms of energy. This is done with practical examples through the use of 3D animations and the latest simulation techniques. After choosing the subject to be examined - e.g. preservation of energy, work and energy, or a specific transformation - the user is presented with information, graphics, animations, and video on it. A hierarchical structure allows more advanced users to delve deeper and deeper into the subject, while others can stay on a level which examines the basics.

The EF - EnergyFlow Software is a valuable tool in teaching science and geography. The importance of using energy is also examined as a social issue. EF provides food for thought for a long time. EF changes abstract concepts of energy into concrete facts. Despite the practical approach taken, the attention to detail inherent in science is carefully maintained. By using the audiovisual possibilities offered by the latest technology, the program is able to offer a new way of examining transformations of energy, which is refreshing for science teachers as well!
