AVP-W98-COM2751-8    Rocks, Minerals and Fossils

Contains pictures, diagrams and text to illustrate common rocks and minerals. Describes their origin and some of the more important properties thus allowing comparisons to be made. Looks at mineral form and habit. Considers different aspects of mining and managing finite mineral resources. Provides examples and descriptions of fossils from each of the major fossil groups and helps with identification of collected hand-specimens. Useful for discussion of themes such as fossilisation and evolution. An extensive glossary can also be added to by the user.

Igneous Rocks

Igneous rocks are formed by cooling and crystallisation of molten rock material. This module provides detailed information in the form of pictures, diagrams and text on the classification, variety, environments of formation, field occurrence, mineral composition and appearance of the more common igneous rocks.

Metamorphic Rocks

Metamorphic rocks are formed by the alteration of other rocks due to the effects of heating, pressure or a combination of both strong heating and extreme pressure. This module provides detailed information in the form of pictures, diagrams and text on the classification, variety, environments of formation, field occurrence, mineral composition and appearance of the more common metamorphic rocks.

Sedimentary Rocks

Sedimentary rocks are the product of the Earth’s surface processes. They are formed from bits of other rocks which have been eroded, broken down into small fragments, transported then deposited as sediments in favourable places. The sediments were then subjected to burial, compaction, dewatering, cementing of constituent grains, and, sometimes, replacement of original minerals before they became a hard rock. This module provides detailed information in the form of pictures, diagrams and text on the classification, variety, environments of formation, field occurrence, mineral composition and appearance of the more common sedimentary rocks.

Common Minerals

Just as rocks are the building blocks which form the Earth’s crust, the building blocks of rocks, themselves, are minerals. A mineral is a naturally occurring inorganic substance. It has a chemical composition fixed within certain limits but its physical characteristics can show great variation. This module provides detailed information in the form of pictures, diagrams and text on the variety of minerals and their physical properties.

Crystals

Under the most favourable conditions a rock-forming mineral occurs in crystallised form. The crystal form and shape is a reflection of the way in which atoms are arranged in each mineral. This module provides detailed information in the form of pictures, diagrams and text on crystal structure, classification, symmetry, form and habit.

Mining

Minerals in rocks, soil and water are the basic source of naturally occurring chemicals (nutrients) essential to all living things on Earth. However, minerals are better known as a resource used by human society to provide raw materials, to produce energy and from which to make machines and manufactured goods. Some minerals such as gemstones are valued for their physical properties, others, like rock salt, are noted for their chemical properties. A few minerals are widely available others are rare and expensive to obtain. Decisions to mine or not are often based on economic factors without regard for matters of conservation, environmental damage or consideration of possible alternatives. Pictures diagrams and text in this module give detail on a variety of mining activities and the impact they have on the environment.

Fossilisation

This module provides information in the form of pictures, diagrams and text on the different ways in which organisms from earlier eras have left recognisable remains in rocks. It deals with the four main categories of fossilisation: Preservation of original material with little alteration, replacement of original material, impregnation of pore spaces with a preserving material and impressions.

Fossils

A study of evidence for ancient life and reconstruction of earlier living processes involves collecting and looking at fossils. This module contains pictures, diagrams and text which describe the variety of classified fossils. Examples from all the main fossil groups are represented.
